Twelve Mile Coulee School-65 Tuscany Hills Road NW

MINUTES
TWELVE MILE COULEE SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING

CALL TO ORDER-7:01pm

WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS OF PARENT COUNCIL

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING-motioned by Santana C., seconded by Karen D., all in favour, motion passed

TMC ACTIVITIES/INITIATIVES
Titan Lunch
First Titan Lunch will be next Thursday Oct 15th. There are lots of grade 4 parents volunteering, hopefully they will go to the other classes to help.
Fundraising
Approx $7800 was fundraised with the sales of the Entertainment Books. Need to decide if we will continue with the Entertainment Books next year. Many books were lost\misplaced and not returned if not paid for, sending out forms with no books is a likely option. Possibly looking at just sending it out with grades 4-6 students
Next fundraiser going out is the Catalog Order Fundraiser
Communication
Santana and Nkechi have entered a bunch of names into the database and hopefully it helps with getting important info out to parents.
Can have each blog post emailed directly to you by requesting it right on the blog.
Casino
Very first Casino is next week October 14-15!
Now that the Outdoor Fitness Center is built the funds can be used in the school.

TMC ADMIN REPORT
Communicating Student Learning-Ms. Reading
Thank you to all the parents for supporting the students in their cross country meets.

Need to have more communication with parents regarding the commitment involved in each sport-costs associated, time commitment for practices and games

New Student Advisory Council starting up, elected students will be meeting with Ms. Reading and Ms. Coles one lunch hour per month. Get the students perspective about what is happening in the school. Grades 4-9 will be involved in the student advisory council.

New this year is having the Learning Leaders invited to School Council to keep us up to date on what’s going on and give more information and updates.

The garbage problem outside is an ongoing concern. Looking at ways to keep the kids accountable and keep the litter picked up. Thinking of putting extra garbage cans at the exit doors outside so kids can have access to more areas to get rid of garbage.

Maker Faire Update-Mr. Simmons
Maker Week will be November 23-27

Once the details are ironed out we will be reaching out to the community seeking specialists who could come in and present for Maker Week.  Maker Week is a celebration of DIY and having the students working together to pick a problem and develop a solution. There will be a Maker Faire on Nov 27 which will be a culminating event showcasing work completed during the week as well as projects completed outside of school. Mr. Simmons is wanting to put together two Maker Carts which will have specialized tools and resources devoted strictly for Maker Faire. Wants to have one cart per floor, these carts would be secured and signed out when used. The cost of the carts would be around $1000. Maker Week/Faire will be budgeting $3000 to use on consumable resources as well as bringing in experts. These costs could be offset by accessing the skills of parents, staff and community members.

Club Update-Ms. Coles
Students are able to see what clubs are offered for what grades and when they take place by checking on the school website and also the info will be displayed on the TV’s throughout the school.
  • Chess Club: Gr 7-9
  • Drama Club: Gr 4-9 Meets Monday/Wednesday Starts Nov 2 and will meet afterschool
  • Dance Club:  Gr 4-9
  • Yoga Club:  Gr 4-9 Will be starting in February
  • Photography:  Gr 4-9
  • Book Club/Book Nook:  Gr 6
  • Crocheting/Knitting:  Gr 6
  • Sign Language: Gr 4  Will be meeting on Tuesdays

These clubs will possibly need parent volunteers, if needed it will be communicated.

Volunteering at TMC-Ms. Underwood
Maker Studio
New this year, will be during the last period of every Day 3
Grade 4 students
Exposes the students to a variety of skills
Asking parents to come in to help facilitate each Maker Studio
For grades 5-9 it would be helpful to have parent volunteers help with food prep

School Website
Learn what is happening in all grades by reading each classrooms blogs.

Atomic 13
Having the students teamed up with different grades has been successful. There has been positive feedback from the kids and they seem to be enjoying it. There was an article on the CBE website about the Atomic 13 challenge.

NEW BUSINESS
Possible ideas to be brought forth for a future Tuscany Community Coalition night.
  • Healthy Minds Healthy Children
  • Supporting Positive Mental Health
  • Mindfulness in the Classroom

 Student Advisory Committee
There has been a lot of interest from students.
There was concern that the application was too hard, it is felt that the criteria will help narrow down the list of students to those that are serious and interested in it. It will be a formal way for the students to voice their concerns. The process has been modelled around the Teacher Advisory Council through the CBE.
