MINUTES

TWELVE MILE COULEE SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING

CALL TO ORDER – 7:03pm

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING – motioned by Santana C., seconded by Stefan M., all in favour, motion passed

TMC ADMIN REPORT
- Mrs. Reading thanked council for the treats provided for the staff on Teacher’s Day
- “Let’s Talk about Learning – conversation about how and why we personalize learning at TMC”
Admin asked council members to read an article (Lifeworthy Learning – David N. Perkins) and to highlight any statements that stood out and that they would like to have a conversation about.

They split into groups to discuss:
• Thoughts on how students learn and how they can apply what they learn to be successful in life
• Learning being about less memorizing and more about taking the basics and figuring out how to apply that in the world
• Ideas on how to support students at home
• Suggestions on allowing more one on one time with teachers at Parent-Teacher

Conferences

TMC ACTIVITIES/INTIATIVES

- Fundraiser
• The Entertainment Book fundraiser is complete - Approx. $7000 raised
• There are still 18 books that have not been returned – please check with your child if they have returned their book if you did not purchase it
• All student’s names who purchased a book/books were put into a draw
• The draw took place at the meeting – a Grade 9 student won the prize package
• The next fundraiser is a catalogue fundraiser and will go out shortly

- Titan Lunch
• Reminder to register/order Titan Lunch by October 14 www.healthyhunger.ca

- Jacket Racket
• Bins for donations are by the front entrance until October 14
• There is a greater need for warm jackets, mitts, toques etc. this year due to the economic downturn and the expectant colder winter

NEW BUSINESS

- Reminder that Eric Harvie School and the Scouts are looking for votes for the “In Your Backyard” contest http://www.inmybackyardcontest.com/category-2.html

- Tuscany Coalition
• Next Education night – Managing Family Finances in Tough Times - Wednesday, October 26, 7pm at St Basil School - Everybody in the community is welcome

TWELVE MILE COULEE PARENT ASSOCIATION MEETING

CALL TO ORDER – 8:06pm

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING – motioned by Stefan M, seconded by Lisa M, all in favour, motion passed

TREASURER REPORT
- Stefan M went over the summary of the Budget Plan
- $895.78 remaining from last year remains approved to buy sand for the jump pit
- Motion to close Raffle Account – motioned by Shan R
- General Account – went through and asked council for ideas on how to spend the money

Discussed:
• Grade 9 Farewell – agreed on same as last year $10 per child
• Compassionate Fund possible needing to be increased
• Educational enhancements and experiences
• All will be discussed further and motioned at the November meeting
• Casino Funds – went through to discuss if items ear marked last year are still required or have been purchased
• Possibly no longer need another 3D printer but admin would like to keep the money ear marked in case another one is required later on
• Admin will present more ideas at the November meeting for spending the money remaining in the casino account
• Possible ideas: Storage for scooters and skateboards eg. A scooter/skateboard rack

NEW BUSINESS
- Needing more Director-in-standing’s for AGLC Executive List

NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING IS ON WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 2, 2016 AT 7PM IN THE LEARNING COMMONS

PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

Yearbooks
They will be distributed on Thursday, October 6 at 12:00 pm. High school students can either pick them up in the main office or have a sibling pick them up.

DJ
We are looking for a DJ for our TMC We Scare Hunger Event on Monday, October 31st in the afternoon.

“Making” Coming to the Learning Commons
We are looking for donations of Lego for a “Maker” station in our Learning Commons.

School Photos
We not received any information about proofs for school photos taken on either September 22 or 30th. We will send along information when we receive it to families who have signed up to receive commercial messages.

September/October Newsletter
Is now posted on the TMC School Website. There is lots of information in the newsletter about things around the school.

Thanks for World Teacher Day
Staff was delighted to find the fresh fruit, puns, special soap in the bathroom and forks in the cutlery drawer! Thanks for thinking of us!

Thursday, October 6th – early dismissal
This is an early dismissal to accommodate learning conferences beginning at 1 pm. There is no early dismissal at Tuscany School or Eric Harvie School.

Lunchroom Supervisor Position
We are looking for a lunchroom supervisor for October 24 – winter break. The position is 2.5 hours per day, four days per week (11:30 am – 2:00 pm). You must apply to the CBE if you are interested in this position.

Volunteer Clearance Process
There is now a charge of $15.00 for parents/guardians to apply for volunteer clearance. Please hold on to your receipt and bring it to the school office for reimbursement.

New Furniture for TMC
Some of our smallest chairs are now at Tuscany and we are replacing them with larger student chairs. We also have 70 student tables that are being refinished. We are looking forward to having this furniture to set up the design space upstairs and add a few surfaces to classrooms.

Bowness School Open House – Save the Date
The Bowness High School Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, November 30th. More information is forthcoming.

IB Program at Sir Winston Churchill
Sir Winston Churchill High School will be hosting two information sessions concerning the IB program at SWC. Both sessions will be the same.

Wednesday Nov. 16 at 5:30 pm in the Theatre
Tuesday Nov. 22 at 5:30 pm in the Theatre

Both sessions are approx. 1 hour long. Then staff will stay for questions and discussion after.

Students apply through the Area One IB application. Students living in Area 1 and wanting to attend an IB school in another Area, must apply through the Area IB application and submit it to Area 1 IB Coordinator. He will forward to the other IB school.

All grade 10 students registered at SWC for September will complete course selection sheets that will set them up for the IB program and apply for the actual program in November of their grade 10 year.

Djembe Drums
The Grade 5 and 6 students are using the Djembes in music and are loving them. Thanks to the TMC Parent’s Association for this wonderful gift of music.

Families Helping Families
Tuscany School is planning an initiative this year called “Families Helping Families” where the school community supports families in need during December. It could be families within the community of Tuscany or we could look for a local school with families in need. Is this something that we would like to support?
